1. If you go to a Parlour and you get a ice chilled cool drinks and if you want to bring the same to the drinkable chillness - what will you do ? (Pl don't say that you would make use of the Stove).

2. If you go by a train and the climate happened to be very chill and you get a side berth and in the absence of the blankets what would you do ? (Pl don't say that you would lift some one else's blanket ?)

3. If you get a Degree Coffee and you are in a hurry to have it early with lesser heat and should be within no time, what would you do ? (Pl don't say that you would forgo the Coffee).

The days were moving on slowly without much of the changes. I was a bit improving in my Studies (Examination time la Nallaa Padikkira Payyan Pakkathil vutkaarndhaal - Improve aaga maatenaa enna ?!). The marks were not that bad. There was a slight improvement.

During the subsequent book outs, apart from going to the Cousin's House, I thought of going to other places as well. I along with my friends went to Ashta Lakshmi Temple, Thiruthani Murugan Temple, Maangaadu Amman Temple, Golden Beach (we had a concession in the entry fee as well), Besant Nagar Beach, Marina Beach. Once on our way back from the Marina Beach, the bus was over crowded and I could get a place at the last seat window side. A cute figure was ready to compromise and sit with my friend. I told her that he would stand. My friend was looking at me with Netrikan. I told Netrikan thirapinum cutie udan vutkaarvadhu thappu (adhu appa - ippa adhellam onnum illa - right ?). My friend was really frustrated.

In one of my trips when I was alone, I just handed the money for a ticket for my back to Tambaram Base. In those days, when you approach Tambaram from the City, the Sky scrappers used to be decreasing and on the contrary the Sky scrappers were increasing and due to which there was an Alarm in my Brain. I could make out that I was going towards the city rather than coming to Tambaram which is situated in the outskirts. That time the following incidence came to my mind, ofcourse not at all worried.

When I was in my Plus One, a friend of mine whenever and wherever he called, I accompanied. Only once, when I called he did not. I was realling waiting for an opportunity. He is from my native village. We used to go in the same bus and come back in the same bus. Our village has four stoppings and we both can use any of the two neighbouring stoppings cos the stoppings are of equal distance from both of our houses. With his refusal, slowly I was keeping a distance. Very soon, on one of the fine evening, I could see him sitting at the front of the bus. As it is, I was in no mood to talk and mingle with him, I preferred to sat at the back. The bus stop came, the gentleman did not get down, why cos, he was sleeping. Normally I used to get down at the first stopping. But in order to confirm whether he himself or with the help of others got down at the next stopping, I might or might not know. Hence, I got down at the second stopping. I waited for the bus to move, even then this so called friend did not get down. I heaved a great sigh of relief. I came to know on the next day from him that he got down at the third stopping which is almost half a Kilo Metre away and ofcourse this was not sufficient. What to do, his fate was good and mine was not that good ?!?.

Before the start of the Book outs, the trainees could invite their guests to the Main Guard Room at the entrance of the Camp which is almost 2 1/2 Km away from our Billets. They used to bring the favourites of the trainees ranging from Idlis, Dosas, Upmas, Snacks, Savouries and sweets.

Just like this our Six and half months training went off quickly. For a Defence Person, when he travels on leave, once in a year he can avail Free Railway Warrant (FRW). It shall be issued from the duty station to his nearest Railway station. For me the nearest Rly Stn is 65 Kms away. Be it Salem, Erode, Karur (Naatamai Aiya Avargal Vooru, right ?!), Trichy. For me the best one was Salem, as it was well connected with the North due the presence of Broad Gauge (BG). Hence, I opted for Salem. The FRW was issued to us for doing reservation in advance and we did in one of the Book Outs. If the FRW was availed, one can make use of the Concession Vouchers (CVs) and 50% would be borne by the Indian Railways (IR).

Hi Buddies, I am back. How are you all ?

On the first Book Out day, I including my friends felt very happy, as we were allowed to go out after a period of three months. Normally for such a long period, we never had restrictions, as we came from the Civil Life. It was really a different experience to have restrictions and it was new thing as well for us . We all had restrictions during the time of examinations at home (To be frank, even during exams, I did not have any restrictions).

During my Training period, we wore Khaki Shirt and Pant and we were from different Squadrons. In order to differentiate, we were given different Badges and with the colour and the number in the Badges, one could easily differentiate and make out about Squadron. Since we were in the Basic Phase, our Number was 1 and the colour of the cloth was White like my Manasu.

My cousin's late Husband, Dr Dhandayutham (a student of Mu Va) was a 'Sahitya Academy Award Winner of 1975'. He was a HOD - Tamil in Kulalampur University (Malaysia). In order to extend support, I did listen to my family members and visited them. So, even now I don't have any idea at all about Chennai. She was staying at Besant Nagar and just before Auto Shankar's Story came to notice, her house was purchased.

During Week Ends, I used to go there in the morning and did spend my time till evening and used to be back the Camp. She has three children namely Arun, Arthi and Ilango and ofcourse, they are all married now (Ah, Aah, E - I mean in Tamil). Dr Dhandayutham wanted to settle in Chennai and he was about to take over the school named 'The School', of TVS Group. But before that could happen, he left this World.

When I was on my way to Besant Nagar in a bus, a passenger was asking for a Bus Ticket from me, as I was in Khaki. On the road, enroute my Cousin's house, a Mum threatened by showing me to her kid saying that if he did not stop weeping, she would complain to me so that I would put the kid into the Jail. It was really a different experience to see the people with such remarks. Ellaam en neram and enna seiya ?!?

It was a great change to have homely food after three months at my Cousin's House though we did have food from 'A Home Away from Home'. Ofcourse, I used to finish my B'Fast at Mess and the Lunch and at times the dinner also at my Cousin's House. The life was going on without much of the changes in Chennai. It was really a different experience to stay away from home and mingle with many, having had no such previous experiences.

During 1988, there was a Major Passing Out Parade (MPOP), for which there used to be events which normally may not be there for other routine Passing Out Parades. We were the junior most lot. We were made to participate in the PT Display as a part of MPOP. Considering my good performance, I was put in the stand by lot. I was very sure that I would not participate in the display. All our friends were given vigorous training for the display. Since we should not be left just like that we were also made to undergo the training. No GTI was watching the stand by that keenly. Wouldn't it be enough for me, so I was extra casual. My bad luck, one of the GTI watched me and I was asked to report to another but very very strict GTI. Sulukku edukka pattadhu enbadhai sollavum vendumo ?!?

For the Display, the dress was full White and White and we were not having. Hence, it was to be purchased from the Market. That way there was a need to go to the Market and I was one among the lucky lot to go out just before three months. Otherwise, three months training is a must before going out in the Civil Area after joining IAF. We went by the Military Truck and what a journey it was ?!?

It took almost three to four hours in the Market to finish the purchase and by the time we were back, it was around 2100 hrs. Food was kept ready for us both NV and Veg. But the ladle was only one, what an experience ? Then we got excused from the Night Roll Call. We were privileged to escape from that. Hardly any one gets excuses from the Night Roll Call.

So, the training was going on smoothly. So, the day of the MPOP came and my fellow trainees did display a very good display ?!? during the MPOP. It was well appreciated, no doubt since I was not one among them - right ?!? The training we did included the Drill/PT/Games and the Education.

Every three months, there used to be new intakes for the induction into the IAF. Those many personnel go out as well. In order to fill the gap, the recruitment goes on. Or else, there will be a lot of short fall and hence, the recruitment used to be there every three months. When it was felt not necessary that time, there might not be recruitments. Or else, the recruitment is a continuous process.

Like IAF, we have Indian Army, Indian Navy. These are the three Services of the Nation and these are Military Forces. Similarly, we have Para Military Forces as well, like CRPF, BSF, etc. In my opinion, the toughest life is of BSF, Army and that of CRPF as well and at times the life in the Navy also tougher. By and large, the life in the IAF is comparatively comfortable.

Early morning – Health Run and every one could have B’Fast. Immediately after the BF should had to go for the Parade. Immediately after the parade, there used to be a Tea Break. It lasted for about half an hour time, during that time Tea and snacks were provided. Then after all should attend the Classes.

Like an officer with different Branches, the men (the correct Terminology is Airmen) were from different trades. Basically, the Technicians and the Non-Technicians. The Technicians are from both Mechanical and Electrical & Electronics stream. For the Mechanical part – the IAF has Air Frame Fitter, Engine Fitter, Mechanical Transport Fitter and Weapon Fitter and the Electrical & Electronic part – Electrical Fitter, Instrument Fitter, Radar Fitter, Radio Fitter. The Missile Fitters are available in both the Branches of the Engineering.

When it comes to Non-Technical Stream – the IAF has Clk GD (General Duties), Clk PA (Pay Accounting), Clk EA (Equipment Accounting), Equipment Assistant (Store Keeping), Medical Assistant (Nursing), the Edn Inst (Education Instructor) and in the Semi Technical - the SEW (Safety Equipment Worker – Basically the trade behind making of the parachutes) comes.

The main idea of keeping all types of tradesmen is to avoid the entry of the outsiders (I mean the pure civilian work force, for any sort of need), keeping the Nation’s Security as the prime concern. In IAF, atleast at times we could see the Civilians as a daily wager or as a casual labour. But whereas in Army, the usage of Civilians is avoided. All types of work required for a Base (Unit) is done by the uniformed personnel. In Army we could see the Civilians working – who are from MES (Military Engineering Service).

The shoes used for the Morning Health Run is Canvas, for the Parade Anklet Boot (Badaa (Hindi) Boot - Periya Boot) & for the Classes Shoes B/L (Black Leather). After wearing the Badaa Boot in the Parade, B/L in the Classes and using Canvas for the PT in the evening after lunch – every one would feel the difference from the heaviest to heavier and finally lighter.

After the hectic exercises, naturally one would feel like to have rest which was not feasible. As a part of training, other than the night time, the rest time within the day was restricted. So I had been warned many a times, for sleeping in the Class and for the Sloth like behaviour. That was the time I used to get a superb sleep. Immediately within a week of joining, there was a Weekly Test – There were four subjects, namely Mathematics, Theory of Flight, General Service Knowledge and English. My marks were 0, 06, 12 and 18 out of 20 respectively. Mathematics was very simple – But I could not solve even a single sum but still I did not deserve ‘Duck’ – Did I ?

On Tuesdays, my friend and I used to go to a Mandir (Temple) inside the Camp. Definitely the “Aarati” (Irai Geedham) was so much live that even today I am remembering those days. The language also not understandable – Hindi. But still we – Non-Hindi speakers could feel a force that was pulling us towards the temple on every Tuesdays, as we used to get full enthusiasm.

On the First Saturday that followed 08 Jan 88, we were taken in Flights (The same ..... I walk in Flight, run in Flight, talk about Flight idhyaadhi ..... idhyaadhi) to a Barber Shop (with atleast 12 chairs) within the camp, for the hair cut. We could see only the Machines which were in action in the hands of the Barbers and the usage of the Scissors was the rarest one. We were really excited to experience (Bitter ?!?) the Flight. When we came back, there was no water supply. The water timings were 0510 – 0730 hrs, 1300 – 1430 hrs and 1800 – 1930 hrs. When we came back, it was around 1000 hrs and we were tired as well. So, every one slept on the bed – The first time in my life time - touching the belongings without having the bath after the hair cut. It was really ridiculous but still we could not help.

Later we had bath and then after lunch. On every Sunday Evening, a Hindi Movie was screened in the Open Air Theatre as an entertainment. For the first three months of the training period, no one was permitted to go out of the Campus as we would not be aware as how to behave ?!? (ofcourse as a Soldier). So, for whoever he was home sick, it was nothing short of a Jail. But what to do ? - After all, it is a Disciplined Defence Service and no other go. I could get an opportunity to go out of the campus before the completion of first three months ………

Hi Buddies, I am back again.

After the receipt of 20 Buckets of Water, the plants in the garden were very happy but I was not. However, it was equally better for the plants for the growth and me (for the improvement of the body health without spending a penny - This way only I could convince myself - right ?!?) as well.

In the morning around six rounds were to be made as a part of Health Run. The total distance covered per day was around 03 Kms. Part of the ground was well lit and a portion of the ground was very dark. After you enter into the ground, you were required to make rounds in flights.

In the evening on 08 Jan 88, when we were dropped at the Domestic Area - We could see a Mini India. Later, in the same evening, I could see a girl in the lot and how come, I was wondering !!!. Subsequently, it was learnt that the individual was a Sardarji. We were allotted with the Billets (Barracks) for the stay. We had bath and then we were taken to the Mess for the Dinner. Rice, Chapati, 02 - Veg Curries and milk were provided. In the case of a Non-Vegetarian, Mutton and 01 Veg Curry were given. There was a very long queue, why because after the dinner, we were to go for the Evening Classes.

As a general rule, there will not be vuppu and sappu in the Armed Forces Food. Why because the excess Salt, Chilli and other Masalas would not only be harmful but also affect the personnel in many ways. Excess of turmeric powder was used and the usage of onion was made lesser. We could see the grease of Vanaspathi in the plates of the Trainees. The chapati was without salt, I had like that for the first time in the life. The same was the case with other dishes (I mean that the salt was very very less but in Chapati absolutely no salt at all and it is the North Indian style of making Chapatis without adding salt to the Atta).

After having the dinner we were heading for the Classes in Flights (I mean whenever we were to go out, we must go in group and that we called it and ofcourse now also we need to call it a Flight). Like in "Velaikaaran (I talk English, Walk English, run English ...), We also went in flights, came back in flights, talked of flights but never flew or flew in Flights. I could not have even a Quarter stomach full of food, as we were not accustomed to the taste of food (How many times I must had commented Mom and Sister about their food preparations and I really had it) and I was very sure that rat would run in my stomach on that fateful day (I mean vaithla irundhu sound idhyaadhi idhyaadhi dhaanunga ......). In the class room, the attendance was taken. We had 10 Flights and we were allotted with the Flight with the last digit of the Service Numbers. That means, in case of an individual, if his number ends with 6, he would be in the Sixth Flight. Accordingly, I was in the Fourth flight, I mean my number ends with 4.

On our back from the class, we were to fall in for the Night Roll Call. It is basically in order to check the availability of the trainees. It is a standard practice. Every day there was a Health Run in the morning, then we could have B' Fast and after which there was a Parade. After the parade, there was a Tea Break and after that Morning Classes were conducted. The morning class timing was from 1000 hrs to 1330 hrs.

Contradictory and unlike the practice in the Civil of

"Eat Break Fast Like a King

Eat Lunch Like a Prince

Eat Dinner Like a Pauper" concept,

We were given a very very limited Break Fast (even when a Trainee Passes Out from the Training Centre, I mean even after he became a Permanent Staff - the same Quantity only would be given as B'Fast) in order to avoid laziness and sleepiness in the Class Room or at work. When it comes to lunch and the dinner, there is no such limitation. When we came after the classes, we were provided with the lunch (Potatoes occupied a major place in all the three times of the food). After the lunch, we could have a nap from say 1400 hrs to 1600 hrs. At 1630 hrs, there used to be P T. After PT we took bath and to be ready for the dinner, night classes and night roll call.

After 2230 hrs, all lights were to be put off. This was to be strictly adhered to. Ground Training Instructors (GTIs) were on the move to check this. In case of non-adherence, the individual concerned had to go in for the punishment. During evening, full sleeves were to be used in order to safeguard from the mosquitoes. A Trainee should make use of the Mosquito net at night. In one Charpoy (cot), only one trainee at a time can sit. If two were found, then the same story, the punishment was given.

If we see very deeply these things, we would understand one thing that all these were for the safety and precaution of an individual. One day due to over heat, I could not sleep in the cot and I thought I would sleep in the Floor. I was noticed by the GTI during his Raathiri Round Up and I was asked to report to him the next day. I got a punishment of pouring 20 big and full buckets of water to the garden which was maintained in front and backside of each and every Billet.

(a) Pilot Officer (Plt Offr) - Now this rank is abolished.

Though the terms 'Pilot', 'Flying', 'Flight' are used in the ranks but these Plt Offrs, Fg Offrs and Flt Lts need not be the officers of the Flying Branch. They can be from any of the Branches.

When I joined, the uniformed lady officers you can find only in the Medical Branch and that also hardly any. It was only in Mid 90s, the lady officers were inducted in the Armed Forces in different Branches. The Lady Medical Officer (LMO) can and should wear a Saree but other branch officers must wear only the Pant and Shirt like that of their male counterpart. It is only at the time of pregnancy and upto three or four months after the delivery, a lady officer can wear a saree.

As far as the IAF is concerned, No. 13 is an unlucky one. That is why the No. 13 was avoided but in the recent past, we could see the usage of the No. 13. In the same way, in the Service Writing (in the writings of the Defence), the alphabet 'i' is avoided (in order to avoid the confusion with the numberal '1' and that is the reason why I had written 'j' immediately after 'h' (against the Air Mshl rank).

Now I want to say something - First of all - as usual I could not include Lord Ganesh on the Top.
In the last Episode, I wrote about the entry into IAF. One is through NDA and another one is through IAF - I mean it should be through CDS (Combined Defence Services) Examination and on qualifying - one can opt for the Service and subsequently it will be allotted based on the merit.

My beloved Mum was not ready to leave me to join the IAF. As it was very difficult to get a job in the late 80s, every one other than her was convinced. However, as a last ditch effort in trying to convince me, my Mum assured that she would not compel me to study. She used to tell me to study the text books as I did not have the habit of studying except during the time of examination and one thing, ofcourse, I regularly did read the magazines, novels and other periodicals ?!?

From my childhood, I used to say "On the very first day, I get a job, I would start smoking". The call letter to the IAF (Where smoking and Drinking were quite common then and ofcourse now-a-days, it has declined to a great extent) also added worries to her. On 08 Jan 88, I was to report to Air Force Station (AF Stn) Tambaram for my induction into the IAF. All out efforts were made by Mom to convince me but to no avail. I had planned to start on 07 Jan 88 in the morning and finally that day also had come. My Dad had accompanied me to Namakkal to see me off.

On 08 Jan 88, I reported to AF Stn Tambaram. It took almost solid, the whole day to complete different forms, documents and other formalities. Like an Employee Number in every Department, we are given and allotted with Service Numer which was allotted earlier in the morning while filling up the forms. During the lunch break, we were allowed to have lunch outside, for which we were given money. Later, it was learnt that on entry into the Defence, the DP (Defence Personnel) are provided with Free Food and Accommodation (Mani Adichaa Soru, Maamiyaaru Veedu - Right ?!). In the evening, we were dropped at the Domestic Area by the Air Force Vehicle (Service Transport).

Now one thing, I want to make you understand that in Defence, there are mainly two categories of personnel, one is Service Personnel (Uniformed) and the other is Civilian Personnel (Plain Cloths). Service Personnel are again categorised into Officers and Airmen (PBORs - Personnel Below Officer Ranks). Civilians are categorised into Group 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D'. These civilians would be deployed only in the Armed Forces Establishment. In order to have better results, NCs(E) - (Non Combatants Enrolled) were inducted subsequently and these are of Group 'D' category but uniformed. The only difference is that these NCs (E) they don't take oath like that of Service Personnel.

By the time we reached the Domestic area in the evening by the Air Force Vehicle (Service Transport), the evening drill was going on. When they all came back, we could see a 'Mini India', as the trainees were from all over India. Training for our batch started on 01 Jan 88 itself, even then we could get accommodated from 08 Jan 88. Being the one from Men Category, I mean Airmen Category, I was an AC (U/T) - Aircraftsman (Under Training) and put in the Mechanical Stream.

In the IAF, the Pilots come in the Officers Category (Flying Branch). The entry is feasible through NDA - National Defence Academy (After 10 Plus 2) or after a graduation in Maths or Physics through IAF Recruitment for training at AFA - Air Force Academy. The Branch does indicate, the nature of job allocatted and performed by an Officer in the IAF. In Transport aircraft (ac), there is a need for the Navigator as well. We have two fliers for the helicopters as well. But for a Fighter, Bomber ac, there will be only one Pilot. These fliers come under the Flying Branch. The other branches of the IAF are viz Adm (ATC - Air Traffic Controller), Adm (FC - Fighter Controller), Aeronauticl Engineering both Mechanical and Electrical (including Electronics), Meteorology, Accounts, Adm, Logistics, Education and Medical.

Hi Buddies,
I am back for the Episode - 3.
In the Medical Examination, about 60% got cleared. It was in Oct 1987, and we were told that by Nov/Dec 87, we would get an intimation for the induction into the IAF.
During my written and the medical examination, I stayed in my eldest brother's friend room, working for Bank of India. He was staying in a Mansion at Mambalam, Chennai. Though there had been an age difference, I could freely move with him, due to his jovial nature. Because of my stay he had to spend more than Rs. 300/-, which if I give he would not accept and I was very sure. Hence, I had left the amount in an envelope in the Pooja Room. Before my departure he could smell and he had returned that amount. I left for my native - Erampatti, Namakkal - Near Salem. Later, due to my brother's remarks to look out for other jobs as well, having seen another advertisement for the similar type of recruitment, I had applied for the same as well.
Nov 87 had gone and Dec 87 had just gone and there was no chance for an intimation. It was 01 Jan 88 (Vaikunda Egadasi), I had just come back from a Tuition Class (Reel, hi hi hi, sorry Real Analysis) and having the Brunch.
My elder brother called me stating that there was a telegram for me from the IAF. I said, "It will be a telegram for my induction into the IAF. Sign, collect and keep it with you, just I am coming, as I am having the Brunch". It was an amazing moment for my brother, as I coolly and casually told him to collect the telegram even without bothering to know the contents of the telegram.
My poor brother did the same, as I directed ?!? Yes, ofcourse, it was an intimation for the induction into the IAF. I was intimated to report to Airmen Selection Centre, Tambaram, Chennai on 08 Jan 88 with the qualifying certificates along with the consent certificate from the parents/guardian, if below 18. Ofcourse, I was above 18, so there was no need for the 'Consent Certificate', allowing the son to join the Force.
Every one except my mother was ready to leave me to join the IAF. My Mom was very much worried on two counts. Firstly, I was never away from my mother even for a single day. Secondly, there are so many misinterpretations on the Defence and the Defence Personnel (DP). Believe it or not, it is the general thinking of the people that a DP is a
(a) Smoker
(b) Drinker
(c) Non-Vegetarian
(d) person with rough behaviour
More over, being away from home, the individual may not have control and he is easily vulnerable to cultivate the bad habits.

I am back for the Episode - 2.

In Oct 87, soon after the Written Test (and ofcourse after having the stomach full of Lunch only) in the afternoon, the result was declared and I was one among those who were cleared for the selection. Since, the selection was generalised into the Technical Stream, there was one more test to put us into the appropriate Stream (Mechanical/Electrical), another one aptitude test was conducted and ofcourse, this one was also an Objective Type one like the one for which we were qualified.

We were called for the Medical Examination on the next day. When we came for the Medical, we were sent in batches. Each batch was having an intake of 10 and 05 each would be sent to either side of the room facing each other. The Medical Officer ordered us to get into the 'Birth Day Dress ?' and had been asked to cough for the medical reasons, best known to the Physicians. We were checked for the flat foot, knocked knee, eye sight, weight, height, chest with the expansion, Sugar, BP and verbal querries.

A Questionnaire was circulated, the questions (which I remember) were -

(a) Why you want to join IAF ? - My Reply - To get a Job

(b) If you happen to come across a NV, What will you do ? - My Reply - I will change the Dining table.

On my come back, when I told these things to my Brother, my Brother told me better be prepared for getting into another job (as my response to the questionnaire were not in the interest of the IAF). Then I realised, and ofcourse not at all worried.

We were told that an intimation would be given to us if selected, a regret letter, if not selected.

Halo Buddies ! I am Senthil EG Iyappan. This Episode, I have decided to start due to the initiative of Mr Shyam. How am I going to proceed and end - Definitely, it is a Million Dollar Question. It was in the 'Late Eighties', I was doing my Final B Sc (Maths) from Namakkal Arignar Anna Government Arts College (AAGAC - Madars University) and it was very difficult to get a job, I mean a decent one be it in a Public Sector or Private Sector. Having seen my brother, a Post Graduate, a jobless for a long time, I was scared. Hence, I was compelled and forced to get into a job at the earliest. That was the time, my friends gave the information about the Recruitment as an Airman to the Indian Air Force and got an application for me as well. We were a total of six friends, including me, applied for the selection test. I just had an idea about the IAF to some extent.

In Oct 87, I got a call letter for the written test. Some of my friends got the dates earlier and some later. Every one including me was very sure that I would not get selected, as every one other than me was either having NCC Certificate or Sports Certificate or atleast did show a great interest and passion for the Sports (Even today - I am not much interested in Sports barring Cricket). In a total of six, three got rejected in the written examination itself. Later in the Medical Test two, one each was rejected for over weight and the under weight. But contrary to every one's expectations, only I got selected ?!?
